Set up was easy and took me (someone who is not very handy) about 15 mins. Pay attention to which sides of this machine you can safely lay against the floor, as you need to lay it down to screw on the bottom plate. This is also important for moving it into your home when its delivered. And make sure not to cut the uppermost zip tie holding the drain hose.
Required tools: open end pliers, tape measure, and phillips head screw driver, they also list needing a level but i didnt use one.
What took me a little while was figuring out the "aerator" situation on my faucet. The manual for the machine says if you have a faucet with threading on the inside of faucet that you should use the included rubber washer to connect the hose to the faucet but i found that the rubber washer was too large and ultimately the only way it would connect to my faucet was to remove that little washer. Not a big deal- there is a small slow trickle of water that comes out but nothing significant. Not sure if others have had this problem or if its just my sink.
Also when I first got this I considered putting it in my bathroom and letting it drain into my bathroom sink (typical little oval shape approx 16 in Wx 6 inches deep). That wouldnt have been a good idea and i would have had a flood. The amount of water that is drained from this machine and the speed at which it drains requires a larger sink , so I use my kitchen sink (typical tub style metal kitchen sink).
Someone mentioned that you could only use cold water with this washing machine which is not true. You simply set the water temperature via your sink's normal hot and cold knobs to the temp you desire and then hook up the hose to the faucet. The manual says not to use water hotter than122 F degrees . Ive not had a problem w/ temp. There is no lint filter on this model and i recommend putting a mesh drain catcher into your sink to catch lint or a some panty hose over end of drain hose. I havent had an issue with my clothes being linty or my drain being clogged.
There is are no gentle, delicate or hand wash settings (just heavy= approx 70 min running time, normal =approx 35 mins, and quick= approx 20 mins) on this machine and I have gotten around that issue by doing the following: I add clothes to the washing machine as usual but I leave the lid open while it fills with water. I leave my clothes to soak for a while and then close the lid and let it swish around for about a minute or less (can repeat these 2 steps as desired depending on how dirty/ bad the stains are). I then turn off the machine, turn it back on , push the "cycle" button until it lights up on the "rinse" selection at which point the water drains from the machine. If the clothes are super delicate i take them out at that point and squeeze out the excess water into the sink by hand. (If they can withstand being spun i leave them in) . I then put them back into the machine once it has finished spinning and draining the soapy water and is filling back up with clean water. Again i leave the lid open, let them sit in the water a few mins , close lid for 30 seconds or so to agitate and then turn off/ turn it on, press "cycle" button to "spin ." The water drains out , i remove my clothes and hand squeeze excess water into the sink and hang to dry.
I also want to clarify that this washer can and does handle loads of clothes well beyond the 1 outfit I described originally. For me, a typical load consists of a cpl pairs of jeans, 10 undies, 3-5 t shirts or shirts , can handle my entire queen sheet set. Can handle my bath mats. Cannot handle my queen comforter or my large kitchen runner
( approx 18 inches by 68 inches) .
There are video tutorials on replacing the belt if needed (i havent had to yet, but if I ever do it looks easy and cheap). Theres also a customer service number right on the inside lid area of the machine and supposedly they are responsive .
Hope these things help. No complaints here. Love this thing.

After a few weeks of looking at the options , and contemplating buying one of the cheaper portable washers that were made of plastic , took up more space, and had no pump, I decided to spend the extra money for this and am so happy with it. I live in the 3rd floor of an apartment building, am a nurse , and was sick of lugging my work clothes down to the washers in the basement every couple days and constantly having togo to the bank to get rolls of quarters. Now when I get home I can just throw my outfit in the wash on quick mode (which takes about 20 ish minutes) and it's done. I air dry everything on a collapsible clothes rack I keep stashed in a closet. It seems to do a better job of washing my clothes than the standard machines in my building ever did. This machine doesn't weigh as much as some of the other comparable machines and my sister and I had no problem carrying it up to my place- this was also a factor I considered when I was buying this. I'm not super muscular or large.. So that mattered to me.
It definitly seems to be a sturdy / well made machine and this brand and machine have good reviews, w/ people reporting after 5+ years , theirs are still working well. I agree with some previous reviews which said that the machine sometimes struggles when the water level is set to high - it will beep and stop abruptly- but it seems like that has only happened, for me at least, when I may have overloaded the machine with towels (which get pretty heavy when they are wet) and this hasn't been a regularly occurring issue.
Would definitely recommend this. Such a time saver and life changer !
UPDATE: 09/22/19. I have had my HLP21N Haier washer now for 2 years. I have thoroughly enjoyed this tiny washing machine. It has saved me a lot of money. I have even washed queen size sheets in it and they came out clean and the washer handled the set just fine. The only problems I have had been ME overloading it every now and again and it would off balance - not the machines fault. However do not wash pants in it as they get COMPLETELY tied in knots and get all stretched out. They go to the big washers here at the complex with towels. I am able to wash all my shirts, hand towels, wash rags and undergarments in here and they come out EXTREMELY clean and fresh. I then hang them on my drying rack to dry and hang up my shirts. I love this little washer. I did buy mine NEW not used or refurbished. I had it delivered to my work and took off early to get it in my apartment before other tenants arrived home from work so no one would see what I had. Even took and brown paper wrapped it. If you are afraid of someone below you hearing it - don't - it is quiet as a mouse. I do have it on a thick sponge type mat to cushion/mute any vibrations but honestly I am 15ft away from it in the kitchen and I do not hear it until it beeps to let me know it has finished the cycle. GREAT LITTLE HAIER. Recommend.
August 2017 -I bought the HLP21N washing machine about a couple of months ago because I was tired of trying to get a washer in apt complex. It was received without any dents and was easily assembled and I started using it within 20 minutes of unboxing it, setting the bottom plate in place and attaching the hose.
I re-washed several of my shirts which I had done earlier in the apt washing machines and this little machine showed just how dirty my clothes actually were. I now do all my clothes in this little machine and hang dry since I do not have a dryer. I however do not wash sheets/bedding or towels in it due to my towels are really thick and my sheets are queen size which would just be to heavy for this machine to handle. I do miss the agitator in the middle since the clothes do get tangled up but I just pause the machine and reach in and separate the clothes. Not a deal breaker.
When it spins the first time it will make noise but that is from it spinning out the major part of the water. After that (unless it is off balanced) you do not hear it. After the rinse cycle it will do a total of 5 different spins to get the water out and will drain after each one. The last spin in the longest. If you do the heavy load which I did one it did an extra rinse. This is a really good machine.
This machine is quite the little workhorse and I really really like it a lot. Worth it. It has saved me a lot of headaches
Update: 09/09/17: Machine still going strong. Yesterday I put in 6 large ladies summer dress shirts, 2 hand towel, 6 ladies underwear and 4 pairs of socks. The machine handled beautifully and washed everything with no problem. Great little machine and has saved me a lot of money and frustration from using the apartment complex's laundry room. Great machine..

Super efficient washer in terms of space, power usage rating and time. Three wash settings, and an excellent spin cycle make this the perfect washer for an apartment. I dry all my clothes (even heavy towels) on a drying rack, as the spin cycle does such a great job.
Worried about drum size? 1 cubic foot does two bath towels, or 10-15 t-shirts, or a pair of jeans and 4-6 t-shirts, etc. A tiny shot of detergent does the trick. The cycle takes maybe 20 minutes.
I also put a strainer in my sink to see what is being sent down my standard kitchen sink drain, and the lint is minimal. I have had no issues with lint on the clothes after a wash.
Another efficiency with this product is the noise level...it is very quiet. I can watch TV or stand over this machine while on the phone, without issue. The spin cycle is the loudest of course, but the machine does not shake on the floor, and the cycle lasts seconds. Should you be in an apartment above someone else, this unit should go unnoticed by your southern neighbours.
Overall, absolutely 5 star rating. I have washed blankets, towels, shirts, socks, jeans, dress pants and shirts and I have had no issue. And of course the water temperature is set manually by you with your taps - and that adds even more potential to the machine. I usually only use cold water, but it's great to know the option is there.
If you're living alone, or maybe with one other person, this unit will serve you well...buy yourself a drying rack at a department store and you're set (Or I suppose you could look at the portable dryers but I did not go that route and I'm happy with that decision). STOP THROWING MONEY INTO LAUNDRY MACHINES...you need your quarters for parking and Mike and Ike's.
We tried to do laundry by hand but that system did not work. Clothes were clean but it took too much time and work. After much thought and budgeting we found out about this washing machine. We read lots and lots and LOTS of reviews.
If you want more reviews to read the amazon.com site sells the same product and has much more feedback than on amazon.ca.
So to cut to the chase - here's the info you really want.
-- It arrived quickly and in perfect condition.
-- It was put together with no problems and was spinning our first load within 30 mins of arriving at our door.
-- We have used all the settings - all functioning normally.
-- Examples of loads -- 15 adult T shirts -- 4 queen sized bedsheets -- 2 big house coats/dressing gowns -- 2 big towels+a bunch of little towels/dish cloths. I am working my way to doing big blankets - which I will do one at a time.
-- As others have commented there is a bit of lint sometimes but I just have to shake the clothes to get it off - not a problem.
Here's some advice about doing the laundry in this machine and drying:
-- Start with really small loads and then work your way up.
-- Don't run the machine and then go out - in the unlikely event something bad happens you don't wanna be out when it does
-- Buy a drying rack!
-- Put everything on a hanger to dry that you can, it makes putting away the dry laundry SO easy! Especially great for shirts. My husband works out a lot so there are many shirts and shorts to wash.
-- Don't save up all your laundry to do in one big lump, do it every day or two to keep a mountain from forming.
-- You can dry big bed sheets in the bathroom easily using coat hangers than have clips on them (like the ones that come with pants in the store) I use 2-4 of the clippy coat hangers per big sheet and then hang them off the shower curtain rail.
One final note: We have only had the washing machine for a couple of weeks. If any problems develop I will come back and update this review. I was grateful for the detailed comments and reviews that I read before purchasing so will try to do the same.
Thanks for reading and Happy Laundry Day!!
I find it best to tape the drain hose against the sink, then there’s no worries of leaking.
It is easy to fill with a bucket, but if it’s not attached to a hose, you have to be very attentive to when it needs to be refilled for the rinse cycle. Takes some trial and error to figure out when to add water.
Do NOT over fill this machine! With clothes or with water. I find that the water level needs to be flush with the top of the spin basin to run a large load.
Wouldn’t put anything larger than towels in this washer. If you need to do sheets or blankets, or jackets, buy the larger washer.
Can wash about 7 t-shirts at a time. Or 30 smaller items. Have used it for hoodies and it works really well. I suggest running a second spin cycle when your load is done. It removes a lot more water. But don’t pull the items out and shake them before running the second spin leave them compact or it rattles like crazy.
Takes about 90L of water to complete one wash. So if you pay your own water bill, consider going to the laundromat instead. It’ll save you more, if being less convenient.
The spin cycle takes out a lot of the water but the clothes are still damp. I find underwear and socks will dry when hung up within about one to two hours. Small towels three to four hours. Shirts can be five hours to overnight. Towels are about the same as shirts.
The plug is three prongs. The drain hose can be moved to either side. And it does come with a kit for permanent install. You can fill with a bucket or use the hose to attach it to a faucet. Very versatile. Also comes with wheels. Do not forget to install the base plate before use.

Mine stopped for a few minutes once while washing two pairs of jeans. Okay, one pair at a time now with socks.
Separate lint free synthetics items from cottons.
Every item is merely damp dry when washed so it does not take long to dry on hangers indoors in the winter.
The water is swished back and forth so that clothes swirl around the tub. Big machines use an agitator to give clothes a real workout.
This machine is excellent for washing dresses and lingerie.
Over al lit seems like a good investment. I wish there was a lint trap in the machine to reduce the amount of fibres collecting on clothes.
Use just enough laundry soap to cause foam and clean. Never, ever use as much soap as detergent manufacturers recommend on boxes and bottles. They always recommend far more than is requred so that you will need to buy soap more often.
